A Homegrown Approach to Physician Leadership

Physician leadership expertise doesn't have to come from a consulting firm. A large nonprofit health system in the Pacific Northwest has developed its own leadership academy, which is saving money and providing physicians with problem-solving tools and skills.

It is very important to grow your own leaders from within. Each group has a unique configuration, patient population, provider mix and culture. If you attempt to overlay leadership training in a "one size fits all" fashion or, even worse, outsource leadership or leadership training to a consultant ... you are setting yourself up to simply spin your wheels. And in my experience working with hundreds of physician leaders .. it is ALWAYS all about the soft skills. Grow your physician leaders. Teach them meeting facilitation and project management skills ... so that when the really big changes ahead take hold ... you can turn on a dime and profit from them.
