More patients spent time in intensive care units during their last month of life in 2009 than in 2000. One researcher suggests that providers could "do a better job" of communicating about treatment options and goals of care.

Thanks for this. In my husband's last month, we were in and out of the emergency room several times simply because we did not know enough to interpret his symptoms. Seems as if people on hotlines are too timid to say, "Just stay home. This is what the end stage is like." Much, much more honesty would have helped a lot, from doctors on down the line.
