Hospital Labor Costs Ratchet Up; Wage Growth Still Slow
This new Bureau of Labor Statistics' Employment Cost Index data is particularly revealing on a couple of points. First, the rate of growth for wages, salaries, and benefits in the hospital sector have adjusted downward over the last decade from about 6.3% in 2000, and are now at about 2.1%, more in line with 2% growth in total compensation costs for the overall economy. Second, this steady decade-long decline in total compensation cost growth in the hospital sector has occurred even as the demand for healthcare workers gets stronger every year. So, decline in the growth of total compensation is decreasing, even as demand increases. [Read More]
Hospital Mass Layoffs Off Record Pace in 2010
On another Bureau of Labor Statistics front, the nation's hospitals reported 137 mass layoffs of 50 or more employees in 2010, down 9.8% from the record 152 mass layoffs in 2009, but still significantly higher than any other year in the last decade. Yet, even with the layoffs, the nation's hospitals continue to be job creation machines, reporting 8,000 payroll additions in December, and 50,100 payroll additions in 2010. This indicates that—like politics—all healthcare is local. While the healthcare and hospital sector will continue to grow jobs, individual hospitals and some parts of the country will continue to struggle. This may actually get worse in 2011 as states look to balance their budgets by cutting Medicaid. [Read More]

BOSTON: Mass. General names new chief surgeon
Massachusetts General Hospital is going outside to hire its next surgeon-in-chief and chief of the Department of Surgery. The hospital announced today it had selected Keith D. Lillemoe, MD, who now holds those titles at Indiana University Hospital and Indiana University School of Medicine. Lillemoe will begin his new job in May, replacing Dr. Andrew L. Warshaw, who held the position for 14 years. A native of South Dakota, Lillemoe specializes in pancreatic and biliary surgery and before going to Indiana in 2003 spent 27 years at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. [Read More]

WALNUT CREEK, CA: John Muir Health names president/CEO
The two-hospital John Muir Health system has named Calvin "Cal" Knight as its new president/CEO, effective April 4. Knight, currently president/COO at Seattle's Swedish Health Services, will succeed longtime CEO Ken Anderson, who plans to retire March 31 after 36 years with the Walnut Creek-based nonprofit system, including the last 14 years as president/CEO.[Read More]

BISMARCK, ND: St. Alexius Medical Center CEO resigns
St. Alexius Medical Center says President/CEO Andrew Wilson resigned voluntarily on Monday to pursue other business opportunities. The hospital's Senior Vice President/CFO Gary Miller has been named interim president/CEO as the board of directors decides how to fill the vacancy on a permanent basis.[Read More]

GASTONIA, NC: CaroMont names new CMO
CaroMont Health announced that Jerry Levine, MD will be joining the organization as executive vice president for clinical integration/CMO. LA JOLLA, CA: Steckel named CNO at Scripps Memorial La Jolla
Cynthia Steckel, RN, has been appointed vice president/CNO/operations executive at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Steckel most recently held the position of administrative director of clinical services at Scripps La Jolla. She has held numerous leadership positions since she began her career with Scripps Health in 1980, including those of administrative director of acute and surgical services and administrative director of critical care services. The American Nurses Association Board of Directors has appointed Michael L. Evans, a nursing school dean and former nursing executive and CNO at several hospitals, as the next president of the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the largest nurse credentialing organization and subsidiary of ANA. Evans, RN, the dean/CEO of the Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College in St. Louis, will begin his two-year term on July 1, succeeding current ANCC President Debbie Dawson Hatmaker, RN.[Read More]

CANANDAIGUA, NY: Stapleton named COO at FF Thompson Hospital
Michael F. Stapleton Jr. has been named the executive vice president of Thompson Health and the COO of F.F. Thompson Hospital. Stapleton now is CEO of Lakeside Health System in Brockport, CT, will assume his responsibilities at Thompson Hospital on March 28.
