OCR Patient Data Breach List Hits Milestone
The number of entities reporting breaches of unsecured protected health information (PHI) affecting 500 or more individuals has hit 225. The web site was born out of HITECH and has been live since February 2010. OCR says the breach reports date back to September 2009. Hence, it's been about 17 months since OCR has accepted the reports. It amounts to about 13 reports filed per month, or 0.44 per day. [Read More]

Health Net Fined $55K for Data Breach
Another state attorney general is using new enforcement powers granted by HITECH—again, at the expense of Health Net, Inc. The insurance giant has been fined by the state of Vermont over the insurer's loss of a portable disk drive that exposed the protected health information (PHI) of 1.5 million people, including 525 Vermont residents. This is the second HIPAA enforcement action of its kind since HITECH in February 2009 granted state attorneys general HIPAA enforcement authority. [Read More]

Insurers are scouring social media for evidence of fraud
Social-networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace have become the go-to places where employers, college admissions officers and divorce lawyers can do background checks. And now insurance companies are exploiting the free, easily accessible websites, according to this Los Angeles Times article. Such sites have become the latest tools in detecting fraud, which the industry says costs the U.S. as much as $80 billion a year and accounts for 3% to 10% of total annual healthcare spending. Investigators who once followed people with cameras now sit behind desks mining databases and searching Facebook. [Read More]
