Robotic Surgery May Improve Head and Neck Cancer Survival Odds
Less-invasive robotic surgery for upper airway and digestive track malignant tumors is as effective as other minimally invasive surgical techniques based on patient function and survival, according to research published in the Archives of Otolaryngology?Head & Neck Surgery. Previous studies have shown that robotic surgery was better for patients to regain the ability to swallow; this one also addressed survival rates. Investigators looked at 89 patients with various stages of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas whose primary tumor was resected using the da Vinci Robot. They were monitored during their hospital stay and up to 33 months after surgery.

RAND Study Questions EHR Effectiveness for Hospital Care
A large RAND study of nearly half the acute care hospitals in the U.S. calls into question the value of electronic medical records, saying that except for basic systems used to treat congestive heart failure patients, EHRs are not improving process of care measures for many large hospitals that have them. "The lurking question has been whether we are examining the right measures to truly test the effectiveness of health information technology," says Spencer S. Jones, a RAND scientist and lead author for the report. "Our existing tools are probably not the ones we need going forward to adequately track the nation's investment in health information technology." Jones and his co-authors write that their "results should temper expectations for the pace and magnitude of the effects of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) legislation. $3 Million Prize Offered to Solve Hospital Admissions Puzzle
A Los Angeles physician is offering a $3 million prize for creating a math model that accurately identifies which of 100,000 Medicare Advantage patients from an actual 2009 database required an unplanned hospital admission in 2010. The idea is to design a suitable predictive model so programs and resources can be focused to prevent those admissions and readmissions and potentially realize savings of up to $30 billion in unnecessary hospitalizations throughout the U.S. [Read More]

Patient Education on CT Scan Risks Lacking
Patients place considerable confidence in CT scans, but they fail to understand the risks they may be taking, researchers say. Patients may be confident in the evaluations the scans allow, but they substantially underestimate the amount of radiation involved in the process. The study, published in the January issue of the Annals of Emergency Medicine, highlights the need for increased patient awareness about the appropriate use of, and the risks inherent in, CT imaging. Patients with abdominal pain are four times more confident in an evaluation that included CT than one did not; however, they substantially underestimated the amount of radiation involved and the attendant peril.
