Hospital Compensation Growth Falls in Line with Larger Economy
Healthcare data nerd that I am, I found this data the other day while browsing the BLS Web site. To wit: The quarterly costs to hospitals for growth in wages, salaries, and total compensation has steadily declined over the past decade and now is roughly the same as the wage, salary, and total compensation growth for all workers in the overall economy. Does this mean we can eliminate higher salaries and compensation costs for healthcare employees as a culprit in the annual, bank-on-it 7% increase in medical inflation? [Read More]
10% of CA Insured Opt for High-Deductible Health Plans
Speaking of trends, my HealthLeaders Media colleague Cheryl Clark writes of a UCLA Center for Health Policy Research report that shows that three million Californians may be paying health insurance deductibles in excess of $5,000. These findings were taken from the California Health Interview Survey, the nation's largest state health survey, which conducts interviews with 50,000 residents about their healthcare. On the one hand, the rate of growth of total compensation costs for employers is a fraction of what it was 10 years ago. And on the other hand, more employees are forced to take these high-deductable health insurance plans, even as their compensation shrinks. Is this how cost containment works? Once again, we see that the American worker—who last time I checked was also the American consumer—is getting squeezed at both ends. [Read More]

WESTON, FL: Cleveland Clinic Florida Names Chief of Staff
Juan J. Nogueras, MD, a board certified colorectal surgeon, has been appointed chief of staff for Cleveland Clinic Florida. A staff physician with Cleveland Clinic Florida since 1991, Nogueras previously served as CMO for the academic medical center, which has a staff of nearly 180 physicians representing 35 medical specialties. As chief of staff, Nogueras will be more intimately involved with recruitment and credentialing, the annual professional review processes, hospital operations and the development of policies and procedures to enhance patient care.[Read More]

LOS ALTOS, CA: Palo Alto Medical Foundation Gets New CEO
The Palo Alto Medical Foundation has named Los Altos resident Richard Slavin, MD, as the nonprofit health-care organization's CEO, effective immediately. Slavin served as president of PAMF's Camino Division from 2000 to 2009, and until recently was the division's executive vice president. Former foundation CEO David Druker, MD, and Slavin were the principal architects of the affiliation of Camino Medical Group into the PAMF. Druker died in July. PAMF has more than 1,000 affiliated physicians and 4,500 employees who serve more than 660,000 patients at its medical centers in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Alameda counties. [Read More]

East Liverpool City Hospital announces that Kenneth J. Cochran has been named president and CEO of the facility. He fills the vacancy created when Mel Creely retired in July. Cochran comes to East Liverpool from Cibola General Hospital in Grants, NM, where he served as CEO since 2008. Before that Cochran was CNO for Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan, CO. He also served as vice president of clinical services and CNO at Good Samaritan Hospital in Bakersfield, CA.[Read More]

WASHINGTON: AHIP Hires New Senior Executives
America's Health Insurance Plans has named two additions to its senior leadership team. Joe Miller was named general counsel. Miller comes to AHIP from the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, where he was the assistant chief of the litigating section with responsibility for healthcare and health insurance. Daniel Durham was named executive vice president for policy and regulatory affairs. Durham is currently vice president for policy at PhRMA. [Read More]

HILLSBORO, WI: St. Joseph's Health Services Names CEO
Gundersen Lutheran entered a management agreement with St. Joseph's Health Services in Hillsboro. Deb Smith, a long-time administrative director at Gundersen, was named CEO of St. Joseph's Health Services effective Nov. 1. Smith's nearly 30 years of healthcare management experience includes positions at the Gundersen Lutheran—Tomah Clinic, Vernon Memorial Hospital and Clinics in Viroqua and the Sparta Hospital. Most recently, Smith has led the Gundersen Lutheran—Onalaska Clinic, Vision Services, and the La Crosse and Onalaska Family Medicine departments. [Read More]

CHICO, CA: Machula Named CFO at Enloe Medical Center
Myron Machula has joined Enloe Medical Center as its CFO. He has worked in healthcare for nearly three decades, and replaces Christine Sarrico, who left Enloe after nine years as a member of the hospital's senior leadership team. Machula most recently served as the administrator of the Surgery Center of Scottsdale, AZ. Before that, he was executive administrator at the Doctors Surgery Center of Kingman and worked at two medical centers as CFO and executive vice president/operations, among other executive experience. FORT WAYNE, IN: St. Joseph Hospital announces new CEO
The St. Joseph Hospital Board of Directors has selected Eric Looper as the hospital's new CEO. He will join the administrative team at St. Joe Nov. 15. Looper comes to Fort Wayne from Oklahoma, where he served in several executive roles, including CEO of Henryetta Medical Center and most recently senior vice president at the 691-bed Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa.[Read More]

PALESTINE, TX: Palestine Regional Medical Center Appoints CEO
Alan E. George has been appointed CEO of LifePoint Hospitals' Palestine Regional Medical Center and Palestine Regional Rehabilitation Hospital effective Nov. 8. George replaces CEO Tim Flusche, who is retiring. Flusche has served as CEO for PRMC and PRRH since 2007. Since 2001, George served as CEO for three hospitals. Most recently, he was CEO for Lakeside Hospital in Bastrop. Before that he was CEO for Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega, GA, and Walton Regional Medical Center in Monroe, GA. [Read More]

Brookings, SD: Brookings Health System CEO Resigns
Roger B. Oberg has resigned his position as president and CEO of Brookings Health System. Kevin Coffey, CFO of Brookings Health System has been named interim CEO by the Board of Trustees. Jones indicated a search for a new CEO will begin immediately.[Read More]
