CVS Fined $75M in Meth Case Settlement
This is not an HR story, I know. It's better located on the police blotter. But, I was amazed that this did not get more coverage in the mainstream media, given the nature of the offense, the size of the fine, and the explicit language used by federal investigators to describe the case. Consider these comments from Michele M. Leonhart, DEA acting administrator: "CVS' flagrant violation of the law resulted in the company becoming a direct link in the methamphetamine supply chain." Wow! That statement leaves little room for alternative interpretations. CVS blamed the multistate illegal sales on "an electronic monitoring system flaw that has been corrected." Hmmm! This is the explanation we get from a company that keeps files on millions of Americans' pharmaceutical records, and keeps track of millions of robocalls everyday to remind customers about their prescription refills. FORT WAYNE, IN: Lutheran Health Network Gets New CEO
The Lutheran Health Network Board of Directors named Joe Dorko CEO of Lutheran Health Network. He has been serving in the interim role since June. Dorko, who has 30 years of healthcare experience, began his career as a pharmacist in Pennsylvania. He held leadership positions at hospitals in Pennsylvania and Ohio, including serving as CEO of Paulding County Hospital until 1999 when he joined the administrative team at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was COO at Lutheran for eight years before moving to the top post of CEO in 2007. [Read More]

KONA, HI: Harter Named Interim CEO at Kona Community Hospital
Kona Community Hospital has announced Kathryn Harter has been appointed to the role of Interim CEO for the hospital. She is currently the hospital's CNO. Her new position starts Nov. 1. Harter has 33 years of professional experience including 19 years in administration. Most recently, Kathryn was CNO at Wythe County Community Hospital in Virginia, a 110-bed for-profit facility.[Read More]

MARTINSVILLE, VA: Philips Named CEO at Memorial Hospital
LifePoint Hospitals, which owns Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, announced that Grady W. "Skip" Philips III will start his new job with the hospital later this month. Memorial's previous CEO, Joe Roach, resigned in July after almost two decades in the post. Roach now heads a hospital in Florence, AL. Philips most recently was president and chief executive officer of Houston Healthcare in Warner Robins, GA, for about two years. Houston Healthcare operates two hospitals as well as heart, surgery and urgent care centers, according to its website. [Read More]

LANCASTER, PA: Lancaster General CEO Called Up for Active Duty
Navy reservist and Lancaster General Health CEO Thomas E. Beeman was called up for active duty starting Oct. 15. Beeman, who holds the rank of captain, has been called to serve up to a year as deputy director of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Bethesda, Md. The center diagnoses, researches and treats traumatic brain injury and psychological health issues among veterans and military personnel. Lancaster General Health's board of trustees will vote Oct. 21 to appoint Executive Vice President Jan Bergen as CEO of the Lancaster General Health system and Executive Vice President Marian McGowan as system chief operating officer and president of Lancaster General Hospital during Beeman's absence. The board that day also is expected to approve a sabbatical for Beeman, as well as appointing him strategic adviser to the board. [Read More]

MURRAY, KY: Bloemer named interim CEO at Murray-Calloway
As the search process continues for the next CEO of the Murray-Calloway County Hospital, the board of trustees unanimously named Brad Bloemer as interim CEO effective Oct. 22. Bloemer, current vice-president of financial services, said he'll do the best he can for MCCH while serving as interim CEO. Current CEO Keith Bailey will stay at the hospital until Nov. 3.[Read More]

LAURINBURG, NC: Parkes named CMO at Scotland Health Care System
Brian Parkes, MD, has been named Scotland Health Care System's first CMO. Parkes, a board certified general surgeon, will spend approximately six to eight hours each week in this new role. Parkes reports to SHCS President/CEO Greg Wood. [Read More]

DELRAY, FL: Tenet's Delray Medical Center Names New CEO
Mark Bryan has been named CEO of Delray Medical Center, a Tenet Healthcare Corp hospital. He replaces Robert Krieger. He has been interim CEO of the 493-bed hospital for two months. He previously worked at Tenet hospitals for nine years, including a stint as CEO of Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach and as VP of operations for the Dallas-based hospital company's Florida region. More recently, Bryan was the senior VP/COO for Birmingham, AL.-based Baptist Health System, which has five hospitals.[Read More]

ASIS Healthcare has announced the appointment, effective immediately, of long-time healthcare executive and former IASIS division President Phillip J. Mazzuca as COO. Mazzuca brings to the 18-facility company nearly 30 years of hospital and healthcare leadership experience. Mazzuca joins IASIS from Brim Holdings, Inc., where he served as president/CEO for two years. IASIS recently purchased Brim Holdings, which operated two hospitals in Texas and Colorado.[Read More]

ROME, GA: Quinlivan to Lead TriStar Hospitals in NW Georgia
John Quinlivan has been named market president for HCA's TriStar Health System's three hospitals in northwest Georgia, and chief executive officer for Redmond Regional Medical Center, effective Oct. 18. Quinlivan will lead TriStar's Northwest Georgia market, composed of three hospitals—Cartersville Medical Center, Polk Medical Center (Cedartown) and Redmond Regional Medical Center (Rome). LEAVENWORTH, KS: Slubowski Named CEO at Sisters of Charity
The board of directors of Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System has announced the appointment of Michael A. Slubowski as president/CEO. Slubowski assumes his new role in January 2011. In the meantime, he will collaborate with William M. Murray, who continues as SCLHS president and CEO for the remainder of 2010, and thereafter in an advisory role until his previously announced retirement in June 2011. Murray has been the leader of the multistate hospital organization, including St. Francis Health Center, for the past 12 years.[Read More]

WATERTON, NY: Victoria Named CMO at Samaritan MC
Samaritan Medical Center has appointed Mario F. Victoria, MD, as its new CMO, effective Jan. 1. A pediatrician practicing with Pediatric Associates of Watertown, Victoria was one of four candidates considered after the hospital conducted a national search earlier this year. He replaces Dr. Spencer P. Falcon, who resigned from the post May 1. Victoria's past leadership roles with the hospital include president of the medical staff, trustee and chairman of the pediatrics department. [Read More]

Lori Wightman, RN, will become president of Unity Hospital in January 2011. Wightman, 50, has been president of New Ulm Medical Center for more than eight years. During her leadership, New Ulm's hospital and clinic adopted a fully integrated medical record. Unity Hospital is a member facility of Allina Hospitals & Clinics. [Read More]

TAMPA: WellCare Adds to Leadership Team
WellCare Health Plans Inc. has added two new executives to its leadership team. Jesse Thomas was named president, south division, responsible for WellCare's businesses in Georgia, Texas and Louisiana, and Lawrence Anderson was named senior vice president and CHRO. Thomas most recently was president of Molina Healthcare of Michigan and Ohio, and Anderson was senior vice president of HR for ValueOptions. Thomas replaces Michael Cotton, who was president of the south division before he was promoted to the newly created position of president, national health markets. Tim Gartland previously handled HR for WellCare on an interim basis, and he will continue with the company in a consultant.[Read More]

SANTA ROSA, CA: Palm Drive Hospital Names New CEO
The Palm Drive Hospital board has selected a Phoenix, AZ, administrator to be its CEO. Richard Polheber, 64, a health care executive with 30 years of experience, will receive a salary of $250,000 a year, and is expected to start at Palm Drive on Dec. 1. He replaces Mike Lieb, who has been Palm Drive's interim CEO since May 24. Lieb did not seek the permanent position. Polheber was interim chief executive officer at the Arizona Association of Community Health Centers in Phoenix. From 1999 to 2009, he was CEO of Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital, a 31-bed acute care hospital in Nogales, AZ. [Read More]

Virtua, owner and operator of four hospitals in South Jersey, has promoted one of its healthcare professionals. Ninfa Saunders of Moorestown was named president/COO. Saunders takes the role held by Richard P. Miller, who will continue to serve as CEO of the healthcare company, which is one of the top employers in Burlington County. [Read More]

FRENCH CAMP, CA: 11 Appointed to Rescue San Joaquin General Hospital
Lodi Memorial Hospital's CEO is among 11 people entrusted with trying to rescue the financially strapped San Joaquin General Hospital. Joseph Harrington, a hospital CEO for 35 years, 17 of them at Lodi Memorial Hospital, will join two other hospital CEOs and several others on the interim county hospital board based in French Camp. The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors decided earlier this year to establish an interim board of trustees to review hospital operations and make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors.[Read More]

Southeast Missouri Hospital has appointed Hugh King as vice president/CFO. He has been serving as interim CFO for the past few months.
