AG Raps BIDMC Execs, Board for Levy's Lapses
My colleague John Commins reports that the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office has chastised the executive leadership and the board of directors at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for years of inaction before addressing CEO Paul Levy's personal relationship with an employee. Investigators determined that while no laws had been broken, the reputation of the prestigious Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital had suffered a blow. The report has already reignited criticism of Levy and whether he should be allowed to continue to lead the health system, with several organizations weighing in, or some might say, piling on. OIG Warns of Pre-Authorization Violations
My colleague Cheryl Clark has discovered that a hospital that offers free insurance pre-authorization services to doctors and patients who need imaging tests "could potentially" be doing so in violation of federal anti-kickback statutes, according to an advisory opinion issued Tuesday by the U.S. Office of Inspector General's Fraud Prevention and Detection Office. Kentucky Fried Health Plan
Interesting column here by my colleague Cora Nucci. She details some recent decisions about so-called "health sharing plans" which pool money for participants in order to pay the bills of others. Many times, these programs do not collect premiums, make promise of payment, or guarantee that medical bills will be paid. She expects to see more of these faith-based alternatives to health insurance as the 2014 deadline for near-universal health coverage nears. But classifying them is tough for state courts, which are having a tough time deciding whether they are health plans or not. In any case, its seems, buyer beware. [Read More]
