So you thought the cost of healthcare was coming down? Think again. If hospitals have their way, they will avoid a potential 2.9% cut in reimbursement from Medicare that CMS plans to introduce in 2011. My colleague Janice Simmons says hospital lobbying groups have already convinced many legislators to argue against the cuts, saying they?re treating sicker patients. I had to laugh when I read that one, because hospital administrators have been privately scoffing at doctors' claims of the same nature when analyzing their quality results. Providers Must Cut Costs as Reimbursements Slide, Study Says
Here's a succinct story that encapsulates all it seems like we've been reporting on for the past six months or so. Reimbursement levels will never be higher than they are now, and leaders had better be prepared to get more efficient. The statistics can be scary. Hospitals would have to cut direct costs by an average of $1,082 per case?14%?to sustain operating margins if average inpatient reimbursements from commercial insurers were paid at today's Medicare rates, according the study.
