Patient Satisfaction With Hospitals Drops
Americans' satisfaction with the hospital industry dropped 5% between the first quarters of 2009 and 2010, falling to its lowest level in five years, according to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index. Dissatisfaction seems primarily confined to inpatient services. "The downturn for hospitals suggests that initiatives to improve the quality of care have not had the desired effect," said Claes Fornell, founder of the ACSI. "A combination of a greater focus on outpatient treatments and an increase in the number of after-hours facilities as an alternative to ERs may help relieve some of the pressure on hospitals and reverse, or at least slow, the downturn in patient satisfaction." Three Essential Steps To Deal With Disruptive Practitioners
Here's something in the news you can use department: If you still think a practitioner's clinical skills trump interpersonal skills, think again. A poll of medical staff services departments nationwide revealed that 68% of medical staffs take behavioral evaluations as seriously as clinical evaluations, and exercises disruptive behavior policies as needed. Medical staffs looking to improve their disruptive behavior policies may use the following three tips as a starting point: 1. Identify the process for handling disruptive behavior; 2. Have a mechanism for tracking and trending behavior, and; 3. Develop a fast track disciplinary process for egregious behavior. [Read More]
In the City, Some Registered Nurses May Not Make the Cut
As many healthcare organizations battle the nursing shortage that is only expected to worsen as baby boomers retire and the need for healthcare grows, new nurses entering the field in cities may be surprised with how they are greeted: An associate's degree in nursing is not good enough. Don't fret too much new nurses. The jobs are out there. The Conference Board has been reporting for months that there are almost four skilled clinical positions available in this country for every candidate, and that the average pay is about $33/hour. WASHINGTON: Varmus is Obama's Pick for National Cancer Institute
After months of speculation, President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint Harold Varmus, MD, as Director of the National Cancer Institute. Varmus, a former director of the National Institutes of Health, co-recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for studies of the genetic basis of cancer, and recent co-chair of President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, has served as the president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City since January 2000. CINCINNATI: Mickus named COO for Catholic Healthcare Partners
Catholic Healthcare Partners has named Steven Mickus its new COO. Mickus has already been serving as CEO of the organization's northern division, a role he will continue, the Business Courier of Cincinnati reports. The division includes seven hospitals in northwest Ohio. James May, CEO of Mercy Health Partners, which is Catholic Healthcare Partners' central division, is also taking on an expanded role. He will, while continuing as Mercy' CEO, lead CHP's newly created Senior Health and Housing Division, a systemwide service line focused on long-term care and senior housing. The COO position comes open as long-serving COO David Jimenez takes over leadership of the Mercy Health Partners' Tennessee region through Dec. 31. He will then retire. [Read More]

RALEIGH, NC: Gettinger named COO at WakeMed Health & Hospitals
WakeMed Health & Hospitals has named Thomas G. Gettinger executive vice president and COO, effective June 28. Gettinger joins WakeMed from Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro, NC. During his nearly 20-year tenure at Moses Cone, Gettinger served most recently as executive vice president for the Moses Cone Health System and president of Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, a 546-bed hospital in Greensboro. BALTIMORE: Chessare named president/CEO of GBMC HealthCare
John B. Chessare, MD, has been named president/CEO of GBMC HealthCare, effective June 14, 2010. He succeeds John R. Saunders, Jr., MD, who was interim president/CEO following the resignation of Laurence M. Merlis in January. Chessare served as president of Caritas Christi Health Care System's Caritas Norwood Hospital, a 264-bed hospital located just outside of Boston, MA, from September 2005 through October 2008. Most recently, Chessare has been a consultant specializing in patient flow and patient satisfaction while reducing costs. Additionally, he served as faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Institute for Healthcare Optimization. [Read More]

Hal Ziecheck has been named COO of Morton Plant North Bay Hospital effective July 27. For 16 years, Ziecheck has been COO of Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, FL. Morton Plant North Bay's current COO, John Couris, has accepted the position of CEO at Jupiter Medical Center. [Read More]

SALT LAKE CITY, UT: Grider Announced as President of AAPC
The American Academy of Professional Coders has announced the appointment of Deborah Grider as president, effective July 1st. She succeeds Reed Pew, who was recently appointed chairman of the board of directors for Eli Research's healthcare group, which includes AAPC, Inhealthcare, ASHIM, and Practice Builders. Grider joined AAPC one year ago as vice president of strategic development. [Read More]

OAKLAND: Arcadian Health names Novello General Counsel
Arcadian Health has named James Novello senior vice president and General Counsel. Most recently, Novello was vice president assistant general counsel for Molina Healthcare, where he implemented regulatory compliance, risk management, and HIPAA government investigations.
