Years ago, while covering a political event in California, the late author and journalist Norman Mailer asked me for some extra paper as we sat in an auditorium. The chance encounter over paper was a reminder for me that the paper chase for physicians is nearing the end of the line. A recent study, however, shows that a "gap exists" between policy makers' expectations that electronic medical records can improve coordination of patient care and clinician's real-world experiences.
