Report Questions Patient Safety Training, Recommends Improvements
A new report from the Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation says medical students are being ill-prepared in patient safety. The report, Unmet Needs: Teaching Physicians to Provide Safe Patient Care, details 12 recommendations for reforming the current medical education curricula to incorporate these vital aspects of providing safe patient care. Federal Leaders Promote ACOs as Part of Health Reform
Current and former top Medicare officials told an America's Health Insurance Plans conference on Wednesday that new directions for healthcare payment reform could include public and private collaborations, such as Accountable Care Organizations. ACOs organize voluntary hospital and physician networks, and reward providers with shared savings in return for better care coordination and other avenues to improve quality while lowering cost. It's a great idea, and we've heard about it for at least four years now. Results are promising. Why are more demonstration projects necessary? Why not radically reform payment via ACOs in the healthcare reform bills? The president keeps saying the bills address cost, but just saying that doesn't make it so. [Read More]
Rival Systems Realize They Gain From Collaboration
This is commentary worth reading from my colleague Cheryl Clark. She talked with senior leaders at two fierce rival hospitals in Nebraska, which are taking the risk of collaborating to form an accountable care organization. The idea is that by having their physicians and surgeons, nurses and other providers track patients from the hospital to the physician's office to the home, each system will drastically reduce avoidable hospital readmissions and improve patient compliance. Pricey imaging pushes up health costs in Massachusetts
In just two years, spending on MRIs, mammograms, and other imaging tests climbed by at least $214 million in Massachusetts, a study has found. That's 20% in two years! You can't tell me that patient need has driven the entirety of this increase. I'm speechless. [Read More]
