Focus on HIPAA Compliance as HITECH Date Nears
HealthLeaders Media editor Dom Nicastro writes the first of a three-part series this week focusing on expert advice on complying with HIPAA and preparing for HITECH regulations. The HITECH compliance date for business associates to comply with the security rule is Wednesday, February 17. As your organization works to comply with breach notification regulations and sets up a "harm threshold" risk analysis team, he writes, it should also go back to HIPAA security 101. "HITECH did include significant changes, but the bottom line is and especially security officers need to do is make sure they actually comply with the HIPAA Security Rule," says Chris Apgar, the president of Apgar & Associates, LLC, in Portland, OR. What Meaningful Use Means For You Now
It has now been a month since the CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology published the interim final rule for EHR certification standards and the proposed rule on the EHR Meaningful Use Incentive Program and meaningful use standards. Another rule proposing the EHR certification process and organizations designated to conduct EHR certification is also expected early this year, writes Andrea Kraynak for HealthLeaders Media. But with incentive payments set to begin in October for hospitals and in January 2011 for physicians, waiting for the release of final rules before worrying about meaningful use standards may not be wise—especially for those hoping to take advantage of the early incentives. FCC to promote mobile health apps in broadband plan
From electronic health record systems to video conferencing to remote monitoring, health IT applications could soon get a boost from the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC has launched a new effort to foster the use of wireless devices and applications in healthcare as part of a national broadband plan the agency expects to release next month, according a senior FCC official. One of the biggest issues for the long-term future of mobile devices is the finite amount of spectrum, or radio frequencies that carry voice and data wirelessly, according to this article in the HIMSS publication Government Health IT News. "FCC must efficiently allocate the spectrum that is available in order to drive innovation for both infrastructure and applications," said Dr. Mohit Kaushal, digital healthcare director of the FCC's Omnibus Broadband Initiative.
