Senate Removes Medicare Payment Cut Delay from Jobs Bill
The American Medical Association got what it wanted Thursday when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) removed a provision from the Senate jobs bill. The plan, which the AMA opposed, would have extended a Medicare payment cut for seven more months. Other healthcare provisions were removed as well. [Read More]
Congress Launches Inquiry into Anthem's Proposed Premium Hikes
Anthem Blue Cross's corporate parent is proposing premium hikes of as much as 39% in California and Congress wants to know why. The rate hike is more than 15 times the rate of inflation, but my guess is the insurer will testify before Congress that so-called cross subsidies are at least partly to blame. California has cut its equivalent of the Medicaid program significantly as it faces a huge budget crisis. Wellpoint, Anthem's parent company, has already blamed part of the reason for the hike on a decrease in the insurance pool from healthy individuals who have dropped coverage in the midst of the recession. Meanwhile, Wellpoint recorded a $2.7 billion profit in 2009's fourth quarter. [Read More]
Comparative-effectiveness: A simple healthcare fix fizzles out
Even before Congress took up the now-stalled healthcare overhaul, it appropriated $1.1 billion to fund comparative-effectiveness studies. Both the Senate and the House included it in their versions of the bill, and President Barack Obama backed it.
