38 UC Medical Center executives split $3.1M in bonuses
Just in time for populist outrage. The Los Angeles Times reports that the University of California regents approved the controversial payment of $3.1 million in performance bonuses to 38 senior executives at UC's five medical centers. According to the paper, the regents said that the payments were linked to improved patient health and stronger hospital finances and said they were important tools to attract and retain talent. The unions, of course, beg to differ. "This is appalling to do this when they are telling the lowest-paid workers to stay in poverty," said Lakesha Harrison, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents about 20,000 UC workers, including hospital technicians and campus custodians. Some of the union's members get bonuses of about $300 a year, Harrison said. In contrast, the payments to the 38 senior managers range from about $30,100 to nearly $219,000. Payments approved by the regents in San Francisco included $218,728 to UCLA Medical Center CEO David Feinberg, on top of his $739,695 base salary; and $181,227 to UC San Francisco medical center CEO Mark Laret, on top of $739,700 in pay. The regents said an additional $33.7 million in bonuses will be distributed among 22,000 lower-ranking medical employees, which averages about $1,531 per employee. I'm not saying these executives don't deserve the bonuses, nor would I argue that the regents' rationale has no merit. But California is reeling right now with a budget shortfall that is prompting drastic cuts across all sectors and levels of government, from public education to early release of prisoners. If you're going to give out six-figure bonuses in this environment, you'd better be ready to take the heat. [Read More]

PITTSBURGH: Burfitt named CEO/president at two West Penn Allegheny Health hospitals
West Penn Allegheny Health System announced that Gregory Burfitt has been appointed president/CEO for Allegheny General Hospital and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital. Burfitt joins West Penn Allegheny from BDC Advisors, LLC, a healthcare consulting firm. Prior to working for BDC Advisors, Burfitt served as the president/CEO of Centura Health, the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in Colorado. [Read More]

PORTLAND, OR: Danielson stepping down at Providence Health & Services
Russ Danielson, Providence Health & Services CEO/senior vice president for the Oregon region, will retire at the end of 2010. He's been with Providence for 25 years, the last nine as its Oregon leader. With more than 17,000 Oregon employees, Providence is the state's largest health system. Its operations include eight hospitals, Providence Health Plans, home health, hospice, long-term care, and physician clinics. Providence will search both internally and externally for a replacement. Recruitment could take six to nine months and Danielson, 55, will remain in his position through that transition. [Read More]

DENVER: Gilchrist rejoins Colorado Medical Society
Alfred Gilchrist, the former CEO of the Colorado Medical Society, is returning there as the new CEO. Gilchrist left CMS on Nov. 13 to lead the California Medical Association, but said he had a change of heart. "It took an out-of-state move for me to realize that Colorado has become my adopted home," Gilchrist said in a media release. [Read More]

OAKLAND: Brosgart named CMO at Children's Hospital & Research Center
Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland has named Carol L. Brosgart, MD, as the hospital's new CMO/senior vice president. Brosgart is a widely regarded public health physician with expertise in the areas of HIV/AIDS, chronic viral hepatitis B and C, seasonal and pandemic influenza, and healthcare policy. She joins Children's Hospital Oakland after retiring from biotech pioneer Gilead Sciences in July 2009. [Read More]

WOODLAWN, MD: James Lawrence Kernan Orthopaedics and Rehab names new CEO
James Lawrence Kernan Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Hospital in Woodlawn, the largest provider of rehabilitation care in Maryland, has announced the appointment of Michael Jablonover, MD, as president/CEO. Jablonover, who currently serves as Kernan's vice president of medical affairs/CMO, replaces James E. Ross, Kernan's leader since 1994, who is assuming the presidency of Chester River Health System in Chestertown. The transfer of leadership at Kernan was Jan. 18. Both Kernan Hospital and Chester River Health System are members of the University of Maryland Medical System. [Read More]

ENGLEWOOD, CO: Harris named CEO of Centura's Physician Enterprises
Centura Health has named Robert Harris CEO of Physician Enterprises, a new operating entity responsible for all Centura Health physician practices. Harris will lead the development and realization of a vision, strategies, and tactics for Physician Enterprises. Harris previously served as associate vice chancellor and chief ambulatory officer at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and vice president of ambulatory care and emergency services at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.
