Meaningful use advisory panel ponders rule changes
This past week, the Health IT Policy Committee's meaningful use workgroup met to discuss potential clarifications and changes to CMS' proposed meaningful use rules. The panel discussed certain elements of the plan, such as the number of quality measures it requires. Currently, providers have to report on 25 quality measures in order to qualify for the first round of incentives in 2011. The workgroup also discussed clarifications to the definition of eligible physicians and the mechanisms to make information available to patients. The panel will share its initial discussion topics with the Health IT Policy Committee on January 13. [Read More]

VA, Kaiser Permanente Unveil Project to Exchange Patient Data Electronically
The Department of Veterans Affairs and Kaiser Permanente have launched a pilot program that will let them exchange electronic health record data about health issues, medications, and allergies. The project is using the Nationwide Health Information Network, which is a set of standards and protocols to help facilitate the exchange of health information. [Read More]

Doctors offered no-interest loans for EHRs
Physicians—especially small doctor practices—are getting a helping hand when it comes to implementing EHRs. This piece in the Chicago Tribune highlights Minneapolis-based UnitedHealth Group's plan to offer interest-free loans to small doctor practices that adopt Ingenix CareTracker, a Web-based medical record system. Similarly, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Chicago-based Allscripts-Misys Healthcare Solutions Inc. also plans to offer a similar loan product aimed at small doctors' practices.

Health Sector Deals, After Overhaul, Seen Reheating In 2010
Healthcare mergers and acquisitions are likely to increase this year, according to this piece in The Wall Street Journal. Predictions are that transactions in the biotech and pharmaceutical markets will remain strong. And with capital markets easing, there could be more transactions for healthcare information technology and device companies, as well as, hospitals and home-care businesses. [Read More]
