Healthcare Spending Growth Slowed in 2008, But Still Outpaced GDP, Says CMS
Healthcare spending in the United States grew 4.4% in 2008, to $2.3 trillion or $7,681 per person, the slowest rate of growth since the federal government started officially tracking expenditures in 1960, CMS has reported. Even with the slower growth, however, healthcare spending continued to outpace overall economic growth, which grew by 2.6% in 2008 as measured by the Gross Domestic Product. [Read More]

VA, Kaiser Permanente Unveil Project to Exchange Patient Data Electronically
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Kaiser Permanente have launched a pilot project in the San Diego area that they say will let them exchange, with a patient's permission, electronic health record data about health issues, medications, and allergies for the first time. The project is using the Nationwide Health Information Network, which provides a technological gateway to support interoperability standards and permits the secure exchange of health information between treating physicians, when authorized by a patient.
