Appendicitis? There's an app for that
Mobile technologies and smart phones have the potential to transform medicine in ways we're only beginning to see. Case in point: There is a new iPhone application that allows radiologists to read scans from their phones. Using a $20 iPhone application called OsiriX, radiologists made correct diagnoses of appendicitis in 124 of 125 computed tomography scans. Cosmetic Surgeons Decry 'Bo-tax'
Plastic surgeons are predictably upset at a proposed tax on elective cosmetic surgeries that would help raise about $6 billion of the cost of healthcare reform. They play both the class and gender cards in claiming that the bill is going to hurt middle-class "soccer moms" more than anyone. In reality, it's going to hurt plastic surgeons more than anyone, which is why they're upset. If we can make progress in covering the uninsured and improving the quality of medically necessary procedures by taxing elective cosmetic procedures, I'm all for it. [Read More]
Should doctors talk to patients on Facebook?
There is an interesting discussion taking place in Europe's medical community that may be of interest to American doctors who use social networking sites. The UK's Medical Defense Union has warned physicians about patients who proposition or flirt with physicians through Facebook or similar social networking sites. Many physicians are discovering that social networking is a great way to interact with patients, but there are pitfalls that both parties should be aware of. [Read More]
