I'm not alone, either. Nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults have searched health information online and two-thirds do so on a regular basis. Adapting to this transformation of the traditionally compliant patient into the well-informed medical shopper will be one of the most significant challenges physicians face in the coming years. Senate proposes quality-based physician reimbursement
The Senate Finance Committee has added language to its healthcare reform legislation that would change the Medicare formula to pay providers nationwide based on a ratio of quality to cost—and not quantity. The system would factor in population differences (age, severity, etc.) and take into consideration special conditions for physicians in rural and underserved areas. Changing how physicians are paid is an important component of healthcare reform, and although we are far from seeing final legislation, this is an encouraging sign. The proposed payment changes wouldn't take effect until 2015. [Read More]
Will patients reject evidence-based medicine?
The major obstacle to adopting evidence-based treatment guidelines may not be physicians, but patients. Newsweek offers the example of a four-year-old with minor head trauma. Research suggests that a head CT scan will not improve care in 99.9% of these cases, but most parents are concerned enough about the 0.1% chance to push for the test for their child. You can't blame a parent for wanting to do everything to ensure a child's safety, but that leaves physicians in a sticky situation. Evidence-based guidelines aren't supposed to dictate care for every encounter, however. They're just guidelines. The judgment is ultimately up to the physician and patient. [Read More]
Geisinger uses Facebook, Twitter to recruit physicians
Is social media the next tool for recruiting physicians? Geisinger has been testing out Facebook and Twitter, and can attribute at least one recent recruit directly to the success of their Facebook page. Social media definitely has its limitations; it's unlikely that it will become a predominant method for reaching physicians. But I wouldn't rule out any methods during a physician shortage. Many hospitals are having trouble recruiting doctors, and if Twitter or Facebook can bring in one or two recruits, then they are pretty worthwhile. [Read More]
Med students "unprofessional" when online
Social media has potential as a recruiting tool because so many younger doctors and trainees are online, as evidenced by a study that found many medical schools are having problems with students posting unprofessional material on sites like Facebook and Twitter. This included material that was classified as profane (52% of the respondents), discriminatory (48%), sexually suggestive (38%), or violated patient confidentiality (13%). The last one is probably the most important. It's one thing for a physician to damage his or her reputation online, but when patient information is involved it is also illegal. [Read More]
