Electronic health records: A Texas model
Cook Children's Health Care System in Fort Worth, TX, plans to install Web-based electronic health records and data integration technology at its 60 offices and clinics. It is also offering personal health records that are controlled by the families of its patients and can follow patients throughout their lifetimes. Children's is also betting that the new technology will help the clinic improve care management and curb costs by developing a prototype Innovation Clinic, which will be a small physician office with two or three doctors. Higher-quality MRIs Raise Questions about Costs and Reimbursement
Do you really need that ultrahigh-field-strength MRI, with a 3 Tesla magnet to diagnose your patient? Providers will have to answer that question if they want reimbursement from private payers. That is why, according to this column by my colleague Scott Wallask, providers should involve all stakeholders—not just executives and physician leaders—on higher-strength MRI purchases. With reimbursement rates potentially in question, the hospital's clinical coding team should be involved in those purchasing decisions, as well. [Read More]
