Lawsuit Demands Payment Parity
A class action lawsuit in California seeks to have Medicare revise its formula for determining geographic differences in physician payment, alleging that Medicare is underpaying between 10% and 25% in 175 higher-cost counties across the nation. The antiquated calculation is just another example of the flaws in the current payment system. While the formula intends to account for regional variations in the cost of living and practicing, it is often inaccurate, and officials can't increase compensation to one region without lowering it in another. Pills cut into pay for cancer docs
This is an interesting glimpse into the business of medicine. Oncologists have traditionally made money from cancer drugs that they buy wholesale and administer in their offices. However, as new pills are being developed to treat certain cancers, patients can simply pick up the medication from the pharmacy, cutting out a revenue source for the physicians. Some doctors say the trend is raising operating expenses. But the way forward is to change with the times: Some oncology practices are opening pharmacies as an ancillary revenue stream to capture profits from oral cancer drugs. [Read More]
FTC Approves TriState's Clinical Integration
TriState Health Partners, Inc.'s clinical integration program cleared a major hurdle this week when the FTC issued an advisory opinion that the innovative program does not pose an antitrust threat. The physician-hospital organization owned by 212 physicians and the Washington County (MD) Hospital became the third group in the country to receive a favorable FTC advisory opinion for its clinical integration program. These types of arrangements are becoming more common, and the FTC seems interested in letting doctors and hospitals pursue them as long as the drivers are clinical integration and better care delivery, rather than just capturing market share. This piece from American Medical News offers some good tips for doctors about how to brand themselves to attract the types of patients they want. It is not a topic that is always front-of-mind for physicians, but if you're in private practice and essentially running your own business, marketing is very important. Doctors that don't like the idea of marketing themselves might find a better home in a large group or at a hospital that has institutional brand recognition. [Read More]
