Meetings are a waste of time. OK, maybe not all of them?plenty of meetings address important topics and are conducted in a productive manner. But many of the executives that I talk to each week say they spend too much time in rambling meetings that are not so productive. The result? Executives who spend their meeting time checking e-mail or skimming unrelated reports. But perhaps there are better solutions than giving one ear to a meeting for an hour.

Obama picks Daschle as HHS Secretary
President-elect Barack nominated Thomas A. Daschle, a former Senate majority leader, as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Daschle has accepted the position, according to Democratic officials. He may also take on a broader role as the administration's health policy chief, according to sources close to the transition process. U.S. hospitals ailing
If the headlines about hospitals cutting services, laying off employees, and closing aren't proof enough, here are reports showing that the hospital industry is not recession proof. Moody's Investors Services issued reports in the past two weeks revising the healthcare industry's 12- to 18-month outlook to "negative" from "stable." Similarly, the American Hospital Association issued a report on how the number of people postponing elective procedures and substantial increases in the number of patients who can't pay for care are hurting the hospital industry.

Nebraska changes controversial safe haven law
Nebraska lawmakers met in an emergency session this week to change their safe-haven law by restricting the age under which a child can be dropped off at a hospital without the parents being prosecuted. The current version of the law did not have an age limit, but was intended to allow parents to hand over an infant anonymously to a hospital without being prosecuted. The problem? Since the law was enacted in September, 35 children have been dropped off at hospitals but only six have been less than 10 years of age. [Read More]
