MDs overestimate patients' medical literacy
Two new studies show that many patients with low reading skills may not understand the written questions that physicians ask them before physical exams. One study by Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta found that 300 men in an inner-city hospital had—on average—a fourth-grade reading level. Only one in six of them understood all seven questions used in the International Prostate Symptom Score, and fewer than half understood more than half the questions, some as basic as: "During the last month or so, how often have you had to push or strain to urinate?" Medicaid growth expected to increase nearly 8%
Medicaid's well-earned reputation as a budget buster is expected to be enhanced in the coming year, as government actuaries estimate that the program costs will increase by 7.9%. It should come as no surprise. Healthcare costs are increasing everywhere, so why should Medicaid be exempted? Hawaii's health plan for children strangled in the crib, parents blamed
Just seven months after it was launched, Hawaii is dropping the nation's only state universal child healthcare program. A state official says families were dropping private coverage so their children would be eligible for the subsidized plan. "People who were already able to afford healthcare began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free," says Kenny Fink, MD, the administrator for Med-QUEST at the Department of Human Services. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has named Patrick Geraghty president and CEO, to succeed Mark W. Banks, M.D., the organization's current CEO. Geraghty will join Blue Cross this month. He most recently served as Senior Vice President of the Service Division of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, a health plan with 3.6 million members. Ed Hannum, a 21-year veteran of AvMed Health Plans has been named AvMed's new president and COO. Hannum's promotion was made by Mike Gallagher, AvMed's CEO and president and CEO of SantaFe HealthCare, AvMed's parent company. Since January, Hannum has served as the acting COO of AvMed. [Read More]

Disease management company Healthways Inc. has named Steve Brueckner as company president. Brueckner, a veteran at Humana Inc., takes over the title from CEO Ben Leedle Jr. He will also serve as the company's COO.
