When Kansas' Promise Regional Medical Center realized it was technologically outdated, it bought some fancy new equipment. But dealing with its poor patient experience ratings took a bit more effort. The hospital started by creating a family nurse liaison position in the emergency department. Then it implemented a 24-hour patient hotline. And it has just started reviewing weekly patient satisfaction studies and holding "five-minute huddles" to discuss improvements. Though each of these patient experience improvements costs very little, the benefits to patients and their families can be limitless. The history of patient experiences
Many hospitals choose to celebrate 100 years of serving by throwing a party or printing T-shirts, but St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, IL, is taking a different route—it has commissioned a book. The hospital has hired a local historian author to tell St. Mary's story through the eyes of its patients and staff, both past and present. The marketing and public relations coordinator got word out that the author was looking to interview people about their experiences by posting signs in the hospital and sending press releases to local papers.
