New kid on the block
U.S. hospitals seeking to participate in Medicare or Medicaid programs just got another option for accreditation. Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved DNV Healthcare, Inc. as a deeming authority for U.S. hospitals. It is the first new organization to receive deeming authority in more than 30 years. DNV?s program, called the National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations, was created to make the accreditation process more streamlined as well as identify ways for improving current standards. Surgeon operates on wrong knee
The surgical team at Miriam Hospital, in Providence, RI, did everything right—they marked the correct knee for surgery and conducted a time-out before the operation. That is until the wrong leg was mistakenly draped for surgery. No one caught the error, and the wrong knee was operated on. In fact, the mistake was first noticed by the patient.
