Most doctors aren't using electronic health records
The headline to this New York Times article is old news to industry insiders. However, articles like this go a long way toward educating the public about the fragmented state of affairs in the industry. Of real interest is a chart that shows EMR adoption by group size. Larger groups have flocked to the technology, and for good reason. To me, this could well be the harbinger of things to come. It is easy to imagine the death of the small group practice, particularly in light of the sure push for quality metrics and performance data from both the public and payers. [Read More]

Packard Kids Connection Website helps reduce fear factor
Lucille Packard Children's Hospital puts technology to work by setting up a site aimed at its young clientele (and their parents, always the second patient in the room during pediatric encounters). The site explains common procedures and tries to allay children's fears. The hospital is not relying on technology alone, however, as it uses dolls to demonstrate various aspects of the procedures. It's an example of the so-called "high-tech, high-touch" approach. [Read More]

Patients rarely use online rankings to pick physicians
This story will probably cause a sigh of relief among physicians. I can't imagine the reaction among the ever-growing number of online clinical ratings services, however. These services may grow in time, and a way to tap consumer sentiment about medical service—not just physician performance—is critical. Yet, when it comes to picking a doctor, most consumers are not going to use the same mindset as they when they choose a hotel. I've used these lodging evaluation sites, but always wonder if the anonymously posted comments are authentic. It is surely a factor in why word of mouth prevails in physician selection. [Read More]
