I just knew I was asking for it when I filed a column about Gen X and Y docs. Last week, I put forth the perception of many administrators and physician leaders I know that this younger crop of clinicians is less engaged in their careers than previous generations. Some readers took me to task for perpetuating such broad, and in their opinion unfair, stereotypes. But it is not my job to shrink from such sensitive topics. Broadband telehealth networks coming to rural America
Help may be on the way for family physicians practicing in rural areas. The FCC has announced a project that would allocate $417 million to the construction of 69 statewide and regional broadband telehealth networks in 42 states. Study finds gap between doctors' standards, actions
A study of more than 1,600 physicians found that doctors don't always follow "the high standards they espouse," according to this Washington Post article. The findings: Forty-three percent of physicians said they had failed to report at least one serious medical error, despite the fact that 93 percent said physicians should report all errors they observe. Similar discrepancies were found for reporting impaired colleagues, administering unnecessary tests, and providing care regardless of ability to pay. [Read More]
Pete Stark: I shouldn't have written that law
Congressman Pete Stark recently said that the self-referral law that bears his name may have done more harm than good, and if he could go back and rewrite it, he'd strip down the fuzzy language so the law simply forbids kickbacks. With all of the additions and changes to Stark this year, I'll bet most of the providers and administrators tasked with complying with the law also regret that he wrote it. [Read More]
