Physicians flock to Texas after malpractice caps
Since Texas enacted legislation to limit awards in medical malpractice lawsuits in 2003, proponents of malpractice reform have pointed to the state's successes as evidence that malpractice caps are beneficial for physicians. This New York Times article strengthens their case even further. Since the caps were enacted, Texas has seen a flood of new physicians--an 18 percent jump in licenses since 2003--and doctors are now waiting six months for the Texas Medical Board to process the backlogged applications. After helping win a $131 billion settlement in a class action lawsuit against Blue Cross Blue Shield, the American Medical Association is now trying to help physicians get their share of the funds. Clooney's HIPAA drama
It may not be as dramatic as an episode of ER, but George Clooney's recent trip to the emergency room after a motorcycle crash has caused quite a stir at Palisades Medical Center in New Jersey. The hospital has suspended more than two dozen employees suspected of looking at the former ER star's medical information for one month without pay. The employees didn't leak any of his information, but still violated HIPAA by accessing his records. [Read More]
FDA may bypass doctors
The Food and Drug Administration is considering creating a new class of medicines, dubbed "behind-the-counter" drugs, which patients could obtain without a physician's prescription. Some drugs under consideration are birth control, cholesterol drugs, and migraine medicine. This will be dangerous for patients, physicians say. It doesn't sound like good news for struggling primary-care doctors, either. [Read More]
