Provider Selection

HealthLeaders magazine, March 1, 2007
Today's savvy healthcare consumers consider a variety of factors when choosing a provider to take care of them, including cost, patient safety, credentials and recommendations from referring physicians or family members. But recent data shows the biggest determinant remains quality. In one survey, 37 percent of respondents cited quality as the single biggest determining factor in provider selection, while only 11 percent cited cost. Additionally, the same survey indicated that many consumers value the competence of individual clinicians more than the reputation of a hospital as a whole; among households that sought information with which to judge healthcare quality, nearly twice as many sought data on physicians than hospitals.
