The hospitals that had the most consistent performance improvement are considered the benchmark hospitals, and while the peer group may sometimes post respectable results, the trend lines typically are not as strong. This is evident in metrics regarding fiscal performance (inpatient expense, operating margin) and clinical outcomes (mortality, complications, patient safety, and length of stay).
