Albany Medical Center Hospital has agreed to pay more than $4.5 million to settle its part of a nearly five-year-old lawsuit that accused hospitals in the Capital Region of conspiring to keep down the pay for thousands of registered nurses. The federal class action lawsuit was filed in June 2006 in U.S. District Court against the Albany hospital, as well as St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, Albany Memorial Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, and Samaritan Hospital in Troy. The legal action remains against Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. The other area hospitals previously reached settlements in the case. The suit charged the hospitals shared detailed wage information and agreed not to compete for nurses over a four-year period. It said hourly rates paid by the hospitals differed by no more than $1.
