Tips from BESD: Resources for patient safety information

Patient safety initiatives are critical to all aspects of patient care. The Joint Commission's emphasis on safety is ongoing and ever-present. Information from its sentinel event database shows that safety hazards remain a serious issue. Since this database was implemented in January 1995, The Joint Commission has reviewed 6,244 sentinel events affecting 6,380 patients.

The Joint Commission has launched a national campaign to help Americans become involved in their care. The Speak Up campaign offers tips and actions to help reduce the risk of medical errors. The award-winning patient safety site can be accessed at PatientSafety/SpeakUp. This site offers brochures, artwork, and information on important topics, including:

  • Preventing errors in your care
  • Five things you can do to prevent infection
  • Reducing your risk of falling
  • Preventing errors in your child's care
  • Avoiding mistakes with your medicine
