Beaumont Hospital (MI) to lay off up to 50 managers and administrators

Beaumont Hospitals is laying off 40 to 50 administrators and managers, a move that comes as some 17,400 employees — including those being laid off — just received bonus checks.

The three-hospital system expects to wrap up the layoffs by year’s end as part of a reorganization triggered by health care reform. The layoffs, announced in an Oct. 4 newsletter, will save Beaumont $3 million to $4 million a year, said Colette Stimmell, a Beaumont spokeswoman.

No layoffs of health care delivery providers are planned.

Skilled nurses with many years of seniority (highest paid) have been part of the lay-offs at William Beaumont Hospital and other Metro-Detroit hospitals. There isn't really, in its true aspect, a nursing shortage - only "a fill the gap" by letting go the skilled, highly paid professionals, and then recruiting new grads and oversea nurses. This lay-off cycle will reiterate again to prevent the skilled health care providers obtain the compensation they deserve. The media (TV stations, health news reporters, radio, etc., don't address this publicly due to the politics involved and the fact that they are paid for advertisements by the health care systems.) The health care providers that remain working for non-union organizations (like Beaumont) better think seriously about getting a union to prevent further lay-offs. A nurse and/or health care delivery provider are better off working for an organization where there is union representation to protect all interests of the employee. If you wait to get the lay-off news with your last paycheck, it will be then too late to start thinking what a union could have prevented. Organizing a union has also a financial advantage for the health care provider in that there would be a pension upon retirement, not just a 401 for all the dedication of the profession you have chosen and have given.
