Medicare HMO penetration shifts stroke deaths from hospitals

High Medicare HMO penetration in a healthcare market does not appear to affect inpatient or overall stroke mortality rates among seniors, but it is associated with a shift in stroke deaths from hospitals to nursing homes or residences, according to a study by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; the University of California, Berkeley; and Duke University in Durham, NC.
