Take careful consideration before diving into a RHIO

If a hospital is not already involved in a regional health information organization (RHIO) effort, it's likely that leadership will soon pose the question, "Should we join a RHIO?" For Larry Tanner, president and CEO of the New Britain (CT) General Hospital, the answer is yes. A RHIO is a group of interested healthcare stakeholders who collaborate to develop the financing, business rules, technology, and governance structure necessary to permit providers and healthcare systems to electronically share patient information in a defined community or region.
