Building a leadership infrastructure: The next step in the evolution of hospital systems

The past decade has seen unparalleled consolidation of individual healthcare delivery organizations into larger systems. The goal that initially drove this trend-leveraging size to lower costs-has largely been achieved. But there are still significant advantages to the multiorganizational structure-at least for those willing to challenge old paradigms and adopt new strategies.
One of the challenges for a newly formed healthcare system is to integrate all of the varied organizations under its umbrella into a coherent whole while continuing to achieve its patient-care mission.
